Description of Program

BAWP Young Writers Camp remote courses give children who are interested in writing the time and opportunity to explore writing through a range of genres of writing. Each of our 10 courses this summer draw upon the unique skills of our Bay Area Writing Project Teacher Consultants (classroom teachers from around the Bay Area!). Kids will be able to explore their interests, discover their strengths and take writing risks that they might not be able to in a traditional classroom setting.

Each day will generally follow the schedule below:

  • 9:00 am: Live group welcome and community building activities
  • 9:15 am: Live mini-lesson
  • 9:45 am: Group released to write on their own
  • 10:00 am – 11:00 am: Teacher check-ins and office hours
  • 11:30 am: Group reconvenes live to share and respond to writing
  • 12:00 pm: Goodbyes

Participants will experience writing instruction with trained writing teachers, writing time, flexibility in what types of writing they want to pursue, guided group and peer response, and daily opportunities to share writing.

Our teachers strive to nurture kids’ growth into independent writers. Instruction includes craft lessons, such as –how to incorporate imagery into one’s writing, how to write clearly, how to create believable characters — as well as method lessons — how to get started, the ins and outs of drafting, how to get a lot out of your peer editors.

The goal of these courses is to have fun with writing while developing a writerly identity.

Factors Leading to the Development of a Writing Identity

Courses

Sold out! Legendary Stories: Fantasy, Myths, Fairy Tales, Science Fiction, and Adventure
June 8 – 12, 2020    –    9:00 am – 12:00 pm.   –    $250.00

Are you the kid who would be first to jump on a flying dragon or the one who builds fairy dwellings in the garden? Write about daring adventures and battles with robot armies. The sky’s the limit…. unless it isn’t…

Sold out! Featuring You!: Spotlight on Storytelling
June 15 – 19, 2020    –    9:00 am – 12:00 pm.   –    $250.00

Who better to tell your story than you? Our lives are filled with a huge range of experiences–some wonderful, some challenging. When we write about ourselves and our experiences we can better understand how we became who we are and where we go from here. (Hint for parents: this is also great practice for writing the college personal statement.)

Sold out! Choose Your Own Adventure: You Decide What to Write
June 22 – 26, 2020    –    9:00 am – 12:00 pm.   –    $250.00

Sometimes adventures can happen in the most ordinary of places. This course is all about choice, so let’s remix, mash-up, create, and play with our words. The possibilities are endless so open your mind and jump aboard!

Sold out! Splendid Beasts: Short Stories From Our Interactions with Animals
June 29 – July 3, 2020    –    9:00 am – 12:00 pm.   –    $250.00

From penguins meeting beluga whales to foxes using their tails to communicate with each other, animals always inspire incredible stories. We will use animals of all types to spark our writing during this course. Unicorns are fair game too!

Sold out! More About Me: Oh, the Stories I Could Tell
July 6 – 10, 2020    –    9:00 am – 12:00 pm.   –    $250.00

Are you a budding content creator? This is the course for you because you get to be the star of the story. You have so much to say and share so instead of just being a consumer, be the imaginer and the creator. Ready? Let’s go!

Sold out! You Crack Me Up: Poems and Other Silly Things That Make Us Laugh
July 13 – 17, 2020    –    9:00 am – 12:00 pm.   –    $250.00

This is the perfect course if you like to play and joke around. Makers of mischief and lovers of laughter, join us because we are going to embrace the silly! For anyone who doesn’t take this course, the joke’s on you!

Sold out! The Great Outdoors (or The World Around Me): Writing Inspired by Time and Place
July 13 – 17, 2020    –    9:00 am – 12:00 pm.   –    $250.00

Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.   -John Muir

They say inspiration can come from anywhere. So let’s go outside! Time outside feeds the mind, body, and soul. It also nourishes our writing as it helps us learn how to pay attention to our surroundings. Little things can have a big impact.

Sold out! The Marvelous World of the Unknown: Writing about the Odd Things We Imagine
July 20 – 24, 2020    –    9:00 am – 12:00 pm.   –    $250.00

This course is inspired by the book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg. In this book, Mr. Van Allsburg introduces us to the strange and puzzling story of Harris Burdick and the drawings he left behind. Here is the question: Is it possible to look at the drawings and their captions without imagining a story?

Sold out! Showing Stories: Creating Graphic Novels and Stories for the Screen
July 27 – 31, 2020    –    9:00 am – 12:00 pm.   –    $250.00

Sometimes the pictures carry the story. This class invites you to create a graphic novel or storyboard a play or movie. The cool thing is that graphic novels and scripts can be any genre. Go ahead and create fact or fiction or surprise us with something in between!

Sold out! Having Fun with Fundamentals: Argument and Persuasive Writing
August 3 – 7, 2020    –    9:00 am – 12:00 pm.   –    $250.00

When you learn how to write persuasively, it can be a wonderful means of expressing your views on a subject. It also helps you to be able to share your ideas and opinions in a constructive way, something you’ll rely on in your professional and personal life. But who are we kidding, we all know it’s so you can persuade your parents to let you have that second dessert.

Sold out! Having fun with Fundamentals: Informational Writing
August 10 – 14, 2020    –    9:00 am – 12:00 pm.   –    $250.00

You do not need to proceed with caution, this is NOT a book report writing course. Bring the topics you already love and know oodles about, and write to teach and share your passions with others! Sometimes it’s fun to be the know-it-all.
