For those of you who scribble song lyrics and rhymes in your notebook, who watch slam poets on YouTube, who have wondered how to make a poem burst from the page in timeless wonder, this camp is for you. During the 4 week session, you will have time to write and share alongside other teens who have a passion for poetry. The workshop is on-line and highly interactive.
During a session, expect to read selections from classic poets such as Nikki Giovanni and Gary Snyder or listen to spoken word artists like Julian Randall, Kevin Yang, and Mayda del Valle. There will be time for you to work in groups to practice performing dramatic readings of your own poetry. By the end of the workshop, you will have a series of writing exercises to use on your own as well as suggested places to perform or publish. No previous poetry or performance experience is required.
Kristin Land has been teaching English literature and composition to high school and college students in the Bay Area for twenty years. She aims to nurture students’ poetic expression as well as their identities as citizens who will be the change they wish to see in the world.
